IRONY

Definition – a contrast in which one term of the contrast in some way mocks the other term.

Verbal Irony – the simplest form of irony, it’s a figure of speech in which the opposite is said from what is intended. The discrepancy is between what is said and what is meant.

Sarcasm is used to insult.

Dramatic Irony – the contrast between what a character says or thinks and what the reader knows to be true. (This form is popular in plays and sitcoms – substitute “reader” with audience.)

Irony of Situation – usually the most important kind for the story writer – the discrepancy is between appearance and reality – or between expectation and fulfillment, or between what is and what would seem appropriate.

Satire – the use of irony to ridicule an idea, a person or a thing, often with an aim to provoke change.
